Robert Hagan

Robert Hagan was born in 1947 in the northern New South Wales town of Murwillumbah, and spent most of his childhood in surrounding areas including the fishing village of Brunswick Heads.

His affectionate early memories of this subtropical area have undoubtedly influenced his paintings of the Australian landscape and rural life.

His studies at Newcastle University led him into his first profession as a schoolteacher.

In early 1985 Robert returned to Sydney to set up a studio at Harbord and began to paint the vivid mental images of the rainforest and red soil plains.

In May 1988 he held his first one-man exhibition of twenty-five of his paintings which was a complete sellout and another exhibition later that year was also a complete success.

From fishermen on the beach to the family horse in the paddock, from the crowded scene of Sydney Harbour to stockmen moving cattle, from shearers at work to colourful flocks of native birds in the wilds, from the wide open spaces of Australia's interior to bustling yacht races, Robert has captured Australia and Australians in his work.

As one art critic said, "One only has to glance at a Robert Hagan painting to know that he is an artist who truly loves his country".
